Getting There:
The modern, compact Fuerteventura Airport receives flights from all over Europe with many low-priced flights available from the UK especially with Thomson and Thomas Cook.
Some of the Car Hire offices have hatchways onto the baggage area which allow you to sort out booking whilst you wait for your bags. Try CICAR who are competitive and efficient.
Alternatively, there are usually plenty of taxis.
El Cotillo is about 40 minute's drive from the airport and is not on any flight paths. |
The Village
El Cotillo is a small fishing village that offers peace and quiet rather than the noise and tourist bustle of the main resorts like Coralejo or Caleta de Fuste. Pronounced “El Coateeyo”, this small rustic little fishing village is dedicated to the virgin of good travel (Virgin de Buen Viaje) and these words can be seen painted on the cliffs in the old harbour. The village has many restaurants and a few bars which cater for most tastes. There is a working harbour and you can still buy freshly caught fish from the boats around lunchtime most days. The old harbour is becoming a centre for restaurants and has been converted for pedestrians only. It has only recently started to be developed for tourism, so it still has the feel of a ‘real village’ with local people living and working there. |

The Beaches
The village offers the choice of a surfing beach to the South or a series of beautiful coves with white sandy beaches to the North.
The surfing beach which is approximately 7 minute's walk from the flat is ideal for surfers and good swimmers and there is often a lifeguard there. For the more deserted beaches, travel the next 5 – 10 miles to the south. Very good for long strolls in the early morning , or in the evening to watch the spectacular sunsets. The other beaches are to the North of the Village, about 5 minutes by car or around 20 minutes walking.
Main Lagoon
Just to the North of the breakwater is the main lagoon which has a little beach bar / café (excellent fish !!) with a car park nearby. You can also walk round to the next cove (behind the large villa) which is more secluded and is excellent for snorkeling. The rocks are full of rock pools at low tide and contain some interesting fish including Electric Blue Damselfish. You may wish to bag one of the “Lobster pots” (round shelters made from lava rocks) but you'll need to get to the beach early to get one of these in the busy seasons. You can go to the other side of the large villa if you prefer the rocky cove. Snorkeling is good in the outer cove with shoals of mullet, parrot fish (known as Vieja locally), Cuckoo Wrasse, Damselfish, Goatfish, and sometimes Barracuda.
You can walk or take the car further along the road to the North to many more little coves, all the way till you get to the Lighthouse at the Northern tip of the island. |
